Grants Pass is a city located in the southern part of Oregon. With a population of over 37,000 residents, it is the largest city in Josephine County. Grants Pass lies along Interstate 5, northwest of Medford and south of Roseburg. The city is located on the Rogue River and is the county seat of Josephine County.

Population

According to the 2020 census, the population of Grants Pass was 37,237 residents. This makes it the 13th largest city in Oregon. The population density was 2,700 people per square mile. The racial makeup of Grants Pass was 84% White, 1.2% African American, 3.9% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 5.4% from other races, and 4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race made up 12.7% of the population.

History

The area was long inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Takelma and Shasta people, before Europeans arrived in the early 19th century. The city itself was founded in the 1870s and incorporated in 1887. Early settlers were drawn to the region for gold mining and timber harvesting. The city was named after General Ulysses S. Grant's victory at Vicksburg during the Civil War.
