Youngstown is a city located in northeast Ohio in Mahoning County. As of the 2020 census, Youngstown had a population of 64,358 making it the 9th largest city in Ohio. Youngstown has a rich history as a major steel production center and is working to diversify its economy through new industries, attractions, and community redevelopment.

History

Youngstown was formally established in 1796 and named after John Young, an early settler. The city's location along the Mahoning River allowed it to become a trading post and transportation hub in the early 19th century.

By the late 19th century, Youngstown had become a national center for steel production and manufacturing. Many immigrants came to work in the mills and factories. Major companies like Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Republic Steel, and U.S. Steel operated large facilities in the area.

The steel industry fueled economic growth in Youngstown through the first half of the 20th century. However, mills began closing in the 1970s, leading to major population and job losses in the area. Today, Youngstown has diversified its economy through healthcare, education, and technology while celebrating its industrial past.
