Middletown was founded in 1802 and originally incorporated as a village in 1833. The city's early growth was fueled by its location along the Great Miami River and the Miami and Erie Canal, which opened in 1829. Middletown was an important stopover for riverboats and canal boats in the mid-1800s.

The city experienced rapid industrial growth in the late 1800s, attracting major companies like Sorg Paper Company, Aeronca Aircraft, Armco Steel and Ohio Steel Industries. Middletown became known as "The Magic City" due to its tremendous economic expansion during this period. World War II brought further industrial development, followed by a period of post-war residential and commercial growth.
