With a population of around 47,000 residents, Mansfield is a mid-sized city located in north-central Ohio. Mansfield serves as the county seat of Richland County and boasts a rich history and vibrant community.

History

Mansfield was originally settled in 1808 by James Hedges, Joseph Larwell, and Jacob Newman. By 1817, the village had been platted and named Mansfield after Colonel Jared Mansfield, the United States Surveyor General who helped survey the area. Mansfield was incorporated in 1828 and chartered as a city in 1857.

Over the years, Mansfield grew as an agricultural and manufacturing hub. With the arrival of the railroad in the mid-1800s, the city became a popular industrial center known for its many flour mills, foundries, and carriage factories. Major employers like Westinghouse, Tappan Stoves, Hydraulic Press Brick, and the Ohio Brass Company helped grow Mansfield's economy and population in the early 20th century.

Today, relics of Mansfield's past can be seen at the Richland County Historical Society and the Kingwood Center, which features a vintage mansion, gardens, and arboretum originally developed by Charles Kelley King, an early 20th century industrialist.

The Mansfield Motor Speedway hosts auto racing events throughout the year. Each August, thousands flock to the Richland County Fairgrounds for harness racing at the Mansfield Harness Racing event.

Other popular local teams include the Mansfield Mavericks baseball club and the Ohio Brass men’s soccer team. Just north of the city, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course hosts major racing events.
