Lima is a city located in northwest Ohio in Allen County. As of the 2020 census, Lima had a population of 37,291 residents, making it the largest city in Allen County and the 3rd largest city in northwest Ohio after Toledo and Findlay.

History of Lima

Lima was founded in 1831 by John Robb and James Ford. The city was named after Lima, Peru because Lima, Peru was the birthplace of the first Catholic saint canonized in the Americas, Saint Rose of Lima. In the city's early years, Lima was a trading hub due to its location along the Ottawa River and between Cincinnati and Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In the late 19th century, Lima began to grow rapidly due to its railroad connections and oil discovery in the region. By 1881, sixteen railroads passed through Lima, earning the city the nickname "The Railroad Center of Ohio." Major industries in Lima during this time included the Lima Locomotive Works, which built steam locomotives.

During World War II, Lima's industries shifted to war production. The Lima Army Tank Plant built tanks for the war effort and employed over 15,000 workers at its peak. Though tank production ended after the war, other industries continued to thrive in Lima through the rest of the 20th century.
