Elyria is a city in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 54,533, making it the largest city in Lorain County and the 8th largest in the state of Ohio.

History

Elyria was founded in 1817 by Heman Ely, who built a log cabin, dam, gristmill and sawmill on the banks of the Black River. Ely began planning the town in 1852, modeling it after New England cities, with tree-lined streets and a town square. The Elyria Telephone Company was founded in the city in 1904, one of the first telephone companies in the nation.

As of the 2020 census, Elyria had a population of 54,533. The racial makeup of the city was 77.7% White, 15.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 2.6% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
