Dayton is a city in and the county seat of Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 137,644, making it the sixth-largest city in Ohio.

History

Dayton was founded in 1796 by European Americans, who cleared land from the native forest and named the new community after Jonathan Dayton. Dayton was the 11th largest city in the nation in 1890. The Wright brothers, aviation pioneers who built and flew early aircraft, grew up in Dayton. The city was impacted by floods in 1913 and in the Great Dayton Flood of 1913.
