Canton is a city located in northeast Ohio in Stark County. As of the 2020 census, Canton had a population of 71,273 residents, making it the largest city in Stark County. Canton serves as the county seat of Stark County.

History of Canton

Canton was founded in 1805 by Bezaleel Wells and named after the Chinese city of Guangzhou, widely known at the time as Canton. The city grew quickly due to its proximity to the Ohio and Erie Canal and favorable location between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. By 1833, the settlement was incorporated as a village and in 1854, it became a city.

Canton was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many fugitive slaves passing through the city on their way to freedom in Canada. The city was also home to anti-slavery activists such as John Brown and Calvin Pease.

With the discovery of oil and natural gas in the region in the late 19th century, Canton experienced rapid industrialization and growth, becoming a center for steel production and manufacturing. Major companies like Republic Steel, Timken Roller Bearing Company, and The Hoover Company were established in Canton during this period.
