History

Anderson was first settled in the late 18th century by a small group of pioneers. The area was attractive due to its location along the Little Miami River, which provided a valuable means of transportation. In 1802, John Cleves Symmes purchased a large tract of land that included the future site of Anderson. The village was officially platted in 1815.

The village was initially known as Neville, after local settler John Neville. In 1870, the name was changed to Anderson in honor of Major John Anderson. Major Anderson was a hero of the American Civil War known for commanding the defense of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor in 1861.

Anderson saw rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the rise of riverboat traffic and rail service through the town. Local industries also developed around this time, including tool manufacturing, lumber mills and nurseries. Today, Anderson retains much of its historic small town charm while continuing to evolve as a modern suburban community.
