History of Fargo

Fargo was founded in 1871 alongside the Northern Pacific Railroad. It was named after William G. Fargo, a director for the railroad and co-founder of Wells Fargo Express. Early settlers were drawn by the prospect of fertile farmland in the Red River Valley. Fargo was incorporated as a city in 1875. It later became a stopping point for steamboats traveling along the Red River.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, agriculture fueled Fargo's growth. It became a major manufacturer of farm equipment. The discovery of the nearby Moorhead Oil Field brought oil wells and refineries to the area in the 1950s. This discovery transformed Fargo into a petroleum center.
