History of Wilson

Wilson was first settled in 1849 with the construction of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad connecting Wilmington to Weldon. The city was named after Louis D. Wilson, the chief engineer of the railroad line. Wilson was officially incorporated in 1849.

Cotton emerged as a vital crop and industry in Wilson during the 1800s. The town served as an important market and trading center for the cash crop. By the late 1800s, Wilson boasted the title “World’s Greatest Tobacco Market” due to its large tobacco trade and auction business.

The coming of the railroad transformed Wilson from a small farming town into an industrial city. The thriving tobacco industry led to rapid growth and the establishment of manufacturing plants, textile mills, and other enterprises. Wilson officially became a city in 1913.
