Mooresville was incorporated in 1873 and named for local merchant Captain John Franklin Moore. Moore operated a mercantile store, cotton gin, saw mill, and grist mill. He also produced bricks used to build many local structures in the late 1800s.

The arriving railroad brought economic prosperity to Mooresville in the early 20th century. The town became a hub for the textile industry. Mills such as the Mooresville Cotton Mills and Adelaide Cotton Mills fueled growth and helped establish Mooresville as a major producer of yarn and thread.
