History

Jacksonville was first settled around the 1770s. The town was named after U.S. President Andrew Jackson, who was born in the Waxhaws area. Jacksonville was officially incorporated in 1842. In the early 20th century, Jacksonville became an important railroad hub and trading center for the area. Camp Lejeune, a major Marine Corps base, was established in 1941 and became a major driver of Jacksonville's economy and growth. Jacksonville is located at 34°44′N 77°24′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 77.0 square miles (199 km2), of which, 75.7 square miles (196 km2) of it is land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2) of it (1.71%) is water.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 80,612 people, 14,308 households, and 7,062 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,054.5 inhabitants per square mile (407.3/km2). There were 18,623 housing units at an average density of 419.8 per square mile (162.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 47.3% White, 36.8% African American, 1.4% Native American, 3.6% Asian, 0.8% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 6.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 13.4% of the population.

North Carolina Museum of the Marine

The North Carolina Museum of the Marine, located at 100 Brewster Blvd, Jacksonville, NC 28540, is a museum dedicated to the culture and history of the United States Marine Corps.
