Gastonia is a city in and the county seat of Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. It is the third largest city in the Charlotte metropolitan area. The population was 71,741 at the 2010 Census.

History

Gastonia was first settled in the mid-1700s as a crossroads farming community. The city was officially incorporated in 1877 and named for William Gaston, a North Carolina Supreme Court justice. Gastonia became a major center for textile manufacturing in the Piedmont during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Several mills and industrial sites fueled the local economy, including the Loray Mill that operated from 1900 to 1993. During the Loray Mill strike of 1929, violence led to the deaths of several workers which brought national attention.

According to the 2020 census, Gastonia has a population of 77,024 residents, making it the 17th largest city in North Carolina. The racial makeup of the city is 63.2% White, 27.6% Black or African American, 7.3% Hispanic or Latino, 3.2% Asian, 0.5% American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 3.6% two or more races.

Historically, Gastonia's economy was based on textile manufacturing and fiber production. Major employers included Firestone Fibers, Burlington Industries, National Waste, and Armstrong World Industries. While manufacturing remains an important component today, the economy has diversified into other sectors.
