Durham saw rapid growth during the late 19th century, propelled by the tobacco industry and establishment of Duke University in the early 20th century. The city has seen further growth and revitalization in recent years, often attributed to the presence of major universities, Research Triangle Park, and a reenergized downtown.

History

Durham was founded in 1853 when Dr. Bartlett S. Durham donated land for a railroad crossing on the North Carolina Railroad. The city was incorporated in 1869 and named after Dr. Durham. By the late 19th century, Washington Duke had built a successful tobacco manufacturing business in the city which later became known as the American Tobacco Company. Duke's son, James B. Duke, later established Trinity College in Durham in 1892 which later became Duke University in 1924.

In the early 20th century, Durham emerged as an important industrial and educational hub in North Carolina. However, as the tobacco and textiles industries declined in the latter half of the century, Durham suffered economically. Revitalization efforts began in the 1990s helped transform downtown Durham into a cultural destination.
