Concord is a city located in Cabarrus County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. With a population of 94,546 as of 2021, it is the county seat and the 8th largest city in North Carolina. Concord is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area.

History

Concord was founded in 1796 by European Americans. The city was named after the Battle of Concord in 1775 during the American Revolutionary War. Prior to European settlement, the indigenous Eastern Siouan-speaking tribe known as the Kadapau (anglicized Catawba) inhabited the area. Concord became the county seat of Cabarrus County in 1796.

During the 19th century, Concord became a trading, manufacturing, and transportation center. The first steam railroad lines reached the city in the 1850s. During the American Civil War, a Confederate prisoner of war camp was located in Concord.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Concord had a population of 94,546 people. Concord is currently the 8th largest city in North Carolina by population.

The racial makeup of Concord is 62.2% White, 24.2% Black or African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.4% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. 16.3% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 36,763 households in the city, with an average household size of 2.51 persons. The median age is 37.3 years old. For every 100 females, there are 92.7 males.

Charlotte Motor Speedway

The Charlotte Motor Speedway (address: 5555 Concord Parkway S Concord, NC 28027, phone: (800) 455-FANS) located in Concord is a motorsports complex that hosts NASCAR races including the Coca-Cola 600 and the Bank of America 500. The speedway complex features a 1.5 mile quad oval track, a 2.25 mile road course, a 0.25 mile track, offices, garages, grandstands, and campgrounds.

The speedway has been the home of NASCAR's All-Star Race since 1985 and is considered one of the most popular NASCAR tracks. The speedway opened in 1959 and was created by driver and car owner Bruton Smith.

Gibson Mill

Gibson Mill (address: 322 Gibson Mill Rd, Concord, NC 28025, phone: (704) 784-4659) is a historic gristmill originally constructed in the early 1800s. Today, it serves as a local history museum and park managed by the Cabarrus County Parks Department. The site features the mill itself, exhibit space, and walking trails along a creek.

Gibson Mill gives visitors a look at 19th century milling operations and local history. It was originally constructed by John Phifer in the 1820s.
