History

The history of Burlington dates back to the 1700s when European settlers began arriving in what was then the backcountry of the Carolina colonies. The area was attractive to early settlers due to the presence of the Great Alamance Creek. In 1821, William Davenport Jr. established a private canal system along the banks of the Great Alamance Creek and named the area Sophia in honor of his wife. The area experienced growth when in 1832, Anthony Morris II laid out plans for a town called Company Shops since the North Carolina Railroad company had established tracks and company shops through the area. In 1851, Company Shops was officially incorporated as the town of Company Shops. In 1893, the town was renamed Burlington in honor of North Carolina governor Thomas M. Holt who was from the area.
