Yonkers is a city located in Westchester County, New York. With a population of 211,569 as of 2020, it is the fourth most populous city in the state of New York and is part of the New York metropolitan area. Yonkers borders the New York City borough of The Bronx and is approximately two miles north of Manhattan.

History

The land that is now Yonkers was first colonized in the 17th century by Adriaen van der Donck, a Dutch patroon who acquired land from Native Americans. In 1646, van der Donck created a saw mill near what is now the southern end of the city. After van der Donck's death, Frederick Philipse bought much of the land that now makes up southern Yonkers. Philipse Manor was eventually confiscated by the state for Philipse's loyalty to England during the American Revolution.

In the 1800s, Yonkers began to grow rapidly due to its proximity to New York City and access to the Hudson River. Major industries like carpet mills, brickworks, and sugar refining drove the city's economic growth. By the end of the 19th century, Yonkers was New York's largest city outside of New York City itself. The opening of the first subway line from Manhattan to Getty Square in Yonkers in 1888 further connected the city to New York City.
