With a population of around 60,000, White Plains is the largest city in Westchester County, New York. It serves as the county seat and is a major commercial hub in the county and the New York metropolitan area.

History

White Plains has a long history dating back to the 17th century when it was founded in 1680. It was named White Plains for the lush fields of buckwheat that grew in the area which took on a whitish hue when in bloom. During the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of White Plains was fought here in 1776. Though the battle was a British victory, it delayed their advance which gave the Continental Army time to escape and regroup.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, White Plains developed into a bustling city and suburban community. Its proximity to New York City made it an attractive place for commuters. After World War II, White Plains saw further growth and became the economic hub of Westchester County.

Geography and Population

White Plains is located in southern Westchester County, approximately 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan. It covers an area of 10.3 square miles. According to the 2020 US Census, White Plains had a population of 60,064 making it the 4th largest city in the New York metropolitan area after New York City, Buffalo and Rochester.
