Troy is a city located in Rensselaer County in the state of New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, Troy had a population of 49,144, making it the 8th largest city in the state outside of New York City.

History

Troy has a long history dating back to the 1700s. The area was first settled by the Dutch in the 1600s and originally called Vanderheyden. In 1789, the name was changed to Troy after the ancient city of Troy. The city grew as an industrial center due to its location on the Hudson River and Erie Canal. Major industries included iron and steel production. The city also became known for its production of detachable shirt collars and cuffs. According to the 2020 US Census, Troy had a population of 49,144 people. The racial makeup of the city was 68.7% White, 20.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 3.9% from two or more races. 6.6% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
