With a population of around 15,130 as of the 2020 census, Tonawanda is a small but thriving city located just north of Buffalo in Erie County, New York. Known as the "Lumber City" due to its history in the lumber industry, Tonawanda sits on the Niagara River and Erie Canal, offering beautiful waterfront views and plenty of recreational opportunities.

History of Tonawanda

The Tonawanda area was originally inhabited by the Neutral Nation Native Americans. In 1805, the Holland Land Company surveyed the area and laid out the village of Tonawanda. By 1830, Tonawanda had grown into an important lumber port on the Niagara River and Erie Canal. The city was incorporated in 1853.

By the early 1900s, Tonawanda was home to over a dozen lumber yards and planing mills. Although the lumber industry declined in the 1920s, Tonawanda continued to grow as a manufacturing center. Major employers included the Tonawanda Iron and Steel Company, later taken over by Bethlehem Steel, and Spaulding Fibre, which produced vulcanized fibre.
