History

The history of Syracuse begins with the Onondaga Native Americans, who had originally inhabited the land. French missionaries were the first Europeans to visit the area in the 1600s. Permanent settlement began around the late 1700s. Salt production around Syracuse fueled much of the early economy and growth. The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 further spurred development. Syracuse was officially incorporated as a village in 1825 and as a city in 1848. It became a major manufacturing hub in the late 1800s and early 1900s. As of the 2020 census, the population of Syracuse was 143,396. This makes it the 5th most populous city in New York after New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, and Yonkers. The racial makeup of Syracuse is 56.3% White, 29.5% Black or African American, 8.6% Hispanic or Latino, 6.2% Asian, 5.2% Some Other Race, 2.7% Two or More Races. Syracuse saw periods of population growth and decline over the 20th century as manufacturing industries changed. The population peaked at 221,000 in 1950 before declining. It has begun to stabilize and grow slightly in recent years.

Economy

Historically, the salt industry, Erie Canal, and manufacturing drove the economy of Syracuse. Today, some of the major employers in Syracuse include Upstate University Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Syracuse University, Lockheed Martin, Crouse Hospital, National Grid, Loretto, and Wegmans Food Markets.
