Southampton is a town located in southeastern Suffolk County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town had a total population of 60,530. Southampton is included in the stretch of shoreline prominently known as The Hamptons. Stony Brook University's Southampton campus is located here.

According to Wikipedia, the first settlers arrived in 1640, when English Puritans from Lynn, Massachusetts established settlement at Old Town (present-day Bridgehampton). The original name for the community was Southampton. The current Town of Southampton was incorporated in 1788 by Governor George Clinton.[4] The town was named after the county town of Hampshire, England.

Population

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 60,530 people and 33,719 households residing year-round in the town. As of the census of 2010, there were 56,790 people, 24,945 households, and 13,579 families residing in the town. The population density was 675.3 people per square mile (260.7/km2). There were 40,516 housing units at an average density of 489.0 per square mile (188.8/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.98% White, 6.62% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 2.28% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.44% of the population.

There were 24,945 households, out of which 23.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.6% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.92.

History

Southampton has an extensive historical background dating back to 1640 when early settlers from Lynn, Massachusetts established residence in the area.
