Rye is a city located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2020 census, Rye had a population of 15,892 residents, making it one of the smaller cities in the county.

History of Rye

Rye was first settled in 1660 as part of the Connecticut Colony. It was originally referred to as Hastings to honor Lady Elizabeth Hastings, wife of Sir Thomas Willys who was an early settler of the area. The name was later changed to Rye in 1666 after the English seaport Rye, East Sussex.

During the Revolutionary War, Rye served as an outpost for regiments of the Continental Army. John Jay, a Founding Father who helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris and served as the first Chief Justice of the United States, grew up in Rye.

In the 19th century, Rye became a popular summer resort for residents of New York City seeking an escape from the heat and crowds of the city. Large hotels like The Square House and hotels along the beach catered to urban visitors.
