Riverhead is a town in eastern Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 13,299 at the 2010 census. The town is in the northeastern section of the county and is the county seat of Suffolk County.

Riverhead is home to the Big Duck building, which resembles a duck. The duck was originally built in 1931 by Long Island locals Martin Maurer and Mason Williams to house their shop that sold ducks and duck eggs. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The Big Duck has since been relocated closer to the center of town and now serves as a tourism information center.

History

The town of Riverhead was founded in 1792. It was originally called River Head after its location at the head of the Peconic River. In 1836, the name was changed to Riverhead.

During the late 18th century, Riverhead served as an important port and commercial hub for eastern Long Island. Goods such as grain, lumber, and whale oil were transported through the port. Shipbuilding was also a major early industry.

In the 19th century, Riverhead became the seat of Suffolk County government. The current Suffolk County Courthouse was built in 1831. Today, government, education, and healthcare are major industries in Riverhead.

According to the 2020 Census, the population of Riverhead was 34,487. This was a 39.8% increase from the 2010 population of 24,674.

Riverhead has become more ethnically diverse in recent decades. As of 2020, 54.5% of residents were White, 17.6% were Black or African American, 29.5% were Hispanic or Latino, 5.8% were Asian, and 5.5% were two or more races.

This museum located at 300 West Main Street preserves the history of Suffolk County. Exhibits explore Native American life, early European settlement, maritime history, and more. The museum is housed in a 1736 home that once belonged to noted judge Benjamin Tallmadge.

Suffolk Theater

Big Duck
