Oyster Bay is a hamlet and census-designated place located on the North Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, New York. As of the 2010 census, the population was at 29,797 residents. Oyster Bay has a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was first settled by English colonists.

History

Oyster Bay was originally inhabited by Native Americans of the Matinecock tribe prior to European settlement. In 1653, the first purchase of land in Oyster Bay from the Matinecock tribe was made by Captain John Underhill. Shortly after, English colonists began establishing farms and villages in the area.

By 1668, the hamlet had become known as Oyster Bay, named for the plentiful oysters found in the harbor. The town served as the county seat of Queens County for many years until the revolutionary war.
