Orangetown is a town located in Rockland County, New York. As of the 2020 census, the population of Orangetown was 52,583 people. Orangetown encompasses several hamlets and villages, including Pearl River, Blauvelt, Orangeburg, and Tappan.

History

Orangetown was first settled in the 17th century by Dutch colonists. It was officially formed in 1791 and was named for the orange trees that lined the banks of the Hackensack River. During the American Revolution, General George Washington headquartered at the De Wint House in Tappan while the treason trials of Benedict Arnold and Major John Andre took place nearby.

Other notable historical sites in Orangetown include the Orangetown Museum and the Cornelius Spring House. The diverse history of Orangetown is reflected in the array of Dutch colonial architecture, Victorian homes, and 20th century structures found throughout the town.

Geography

Orangetown is located at (41.1006, -73.9759). It has a total area of 24 square miles, of which 22 square miles is land and 2 square miles is water. The town is situated along the western bank of the Hudson River, just north of the New Jersey border. It is bordered by the town of Clarkstown to the west, Haverstraw to the north, and Ramapo to the southwest.

Some notable geographic features of Orangetown include the Piermont Marsh, Sparkill Creek, and the Palisades cliffs along the Hudson River. The marsh is an important wetland habitat, while Sparkill Creek flows south to north before emptying into the Hudson.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, Orangetown had a population of 52,583. The racial makeup of the town was 77.3% White, 5.5% Black or African American, 0.1% Native American, 10.9% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 3.8% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race made up 13.1% of the population.

There were 19,176 households and 12,342 families in the town. The median income for a household was $98,576 while the per capita income was $44,195. About 3.7% of families and 5.8% of the overall population were below the poverty line.
