History [1]

In 1733, a fur trapper named Johannes van Tassel set up a trading post at the intersection of South Gully Road and Main Street, near where the New City Library now stands. In those days, it was water that brought life to this remote settlement, so it was fitting that its name first reflected that: Kakiat. It is a Native American word meaning "water edge."

Over the next hundred years, life in the area was simple and agricultural. In 1837, the county gave Kakiat its new official name when it established the village of New City, so-called because it was then the newest town in the county. The postgres building, across from the library, dates from that period and once served as the town's general store and post office.

By 1874, Kakiat was no longer remote. The railroad came to town, bringing commerce, trade and waves of new residents. Incorporated in 1894, New City soon became a self-sufficient community with a booming downtown centered around Main Street.
