Mount Vernon is a city in Westchester County, New York with a population of 68,381 as of the 2020 census. Mount Vernon is located approximately 15 miles north of Midtown Manhattan.

History

Mount Vernon has a long and storied history dating back to the 17th century when it was inhabited by the Wappinger tribe of Native Americans. It was originally known as East Woods and was part of the Phillipse Patent granted to Frederick Phillipse in 1697. The current name pays homage to George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. Mount Vernon became an incorporated village in 1853 and a city in 1892.

As of the 2020 census, the population of Mount Vernon was 68,381. This represents a 4.2% decrease from the 2010 census when the population was 71,397. Mount Vernon is currently the eighth largest city in New York state.

The racial makeup of Mount Vernon is 32.3% White, 62.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.4% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race make up 6.5% of the population.

There are 24,068 households and an average of 2.73 people per household. The median age is 36.7 years old. 24.3% of residents are under age 18 while 13.1% are age 65 or older.
