Manhattan, often referred to locally as The City, is the most densely populated and geographically smallest of the 5 boroughs of New York City. Manhattan serves as the city's economic and administrative center, cultural identifier, and historical birthplace.

The borough consists of Manhattan Island, bounded by the Hudson, East, and Harlem Rivers, as well as several small adjacent islands. Manhattan additionally contains Marble Hill, a small neighborhood now on the U.S. mainland, separated from the rest of Manhattan by the construction of the Harlem Ship Canal in 1895.

History

Manhattan was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. In 1524 the first European explorer to arrive was Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer in the service of the French crown. He claimed the area for France and named it Nouvelle Angoulême (New Angoulême).

A Spanish expedition led by captain Estêvão Gomes visited the area in 1525 and named it Nueva Anglia (New England). In 1614 Dutch settlers established trade with the Native Americans and named the area New Netherland. The Dutch West India Company was chartered in 1623 and New Amsterdam became the capital of New Netherland in 1653. New Amsterdam surrendered to the British in 1664 and was renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York.
