Long Beach is a city located on the south shore of Long Island in Nassau County, New York. With a population of over 33,000 residents as of the 2020 US Census, it is one of the larger cities on the island. Long Beach stretches approximately 2.5 miles along the Atlantic Ocean coastline and is bordered by Reynolds Channel to the north, east and west.

History

The area that is now Long Beach was originally inhabited by the Merrick tribe of the Lenape Native Americans prior to European colonization. In the mid-1600s, English settlers began establishing towns across Long Island. The current land that makes up Long Beach was part of the Town of Hempstead until the late 19th century.

Long Beach started to develop as a resort town in the early 20th century. In 1902, the Long Beach Hotel Corp was established and they built a large hotel, boardwalk, concession stands, and other amenities to attract tourists and vacationers. The area around the hotel became known as Long Beach, separating from the Town of Hempstead. In 1922, Long Beach officially incorporated as a city.

Over the decades, Long Beach established itself as one of the most popular beachside communities on Long Island. Tourism and vacationers continue to be a major part of the city's economy and identity. The city also has a large permanent residential population and is considered a desirable community for commuters to New York City.
