Levittown is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York on Long Island. As of the 2020 census, the CDP population was 51,881. Levittown is famous as the first modern planned suburb in the United States.

History

Levittown was created in 1947 as part of an affordable housing development by Levitt & Sons. Returning veterans from World War II created a demand for new housing on Long Island. William Levitt capitalized on the opportunity and designed a community offering affordable homes mass-produced on an assembly line.

The first homes sold for $7,990 ($95,743 in 2023 dollars) with no down payment required from veterans. The community grew rapidly, with more than 17,000 homes and 82,000 residents by 1952. Levittown became widely recognized as the archetype of postwar suburbs throughout the country.
