Some key facts about Lawrence:

History of Lawrence

The earliest inhabitants of the area that is now Lawrence were the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. European settlers began arriving in the late 17th century, establishing farms and homesteads. The village of Maidenhead (later renamed Lawrenceville) was founded in 1697 and became the commercial center of the township. During the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington's Continental Army crossed through Maidenhead in December 1776 during the retreat from the British forces after the Battle of Trenton.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Lawrence continued to grow as an agricultural and industrial center, with water power the generator of industry. Paper mills, grist mills, saw mills, and woolen factories opened along the Shabakunk and Assunpink Creeks. The industrial development led to the construction of transportation networks such as the Delaware & Raritan Canal in 1834 and the Camden & Amboy Railroad in 1836, further expanding commerce and population growth.
