Hempstead is a city located in Nassau County on Long Island in the state of New York. With a population of over 700,000 as of the 2020 census, it is the most populous city in Nassau County and the most populous town in New York.

Population

As of the 2020 census, the population of Hempstead was 759,757 making it the 18th most populous city in the United States. It has a population density of over 13,000 people per square mile. The racial makeup of Hempstead is 25.4% White, 47.8% African American, 0.6% Native American, 1.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 19% from other races, and 5.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race make up 34.4% of the population.

History

Hempstead was first settled in 1644 following the establishment of a treaty between English colonists and the Lenape Native Americans. It was named after Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, England. During the American Revolution, Hempstead was occupied by British forces for most of the war. It became an important center for shipping and trade in the 19th century. Major expansion occurred after World War II with suburban development.
