Hamburg is a town in Erie County, New York, United States with a population of 56,936 as of the 2020 census. Hamburg is the largest and most populous town in Erie County. The town is named after the city of Hamburg, in Germany. The Town of Hamburg is a southtown within the county, located south of Buffalo. It is also one of the Southtowns in Erie County.

Hamburg is known as "The Gateway to the Southtowns". The villages of Hamburg and Blasdell are located within the town. Hamburg is the ninth-most-populous town in New York State (out of 932).

History

Settled originally in 1803, the Town of Hamburg was formed from the southern part of the Town of Willink on March 20, 1812, almost four years before the formation of Erie County. At the time, Clinton was composed of all of today's (present-day) Erie County and almost all of Niagara County. When Erie County was established in April 1821, all of the Town of Clinton was incorporated into the Town of Willink. In 1824, Willink was divided into four separate towns: Amherst and Clarence making up the northern two tiers of the county with Hamburg and Collins the two southern tiers. The individual towns had little power at the time and were subject to the county Board of Supervisors which could oversee local government functions.

By midcentury Hamburg's increasing population and independence coupled with differences of opinion between the southern and northern tier towns led to petitions requesting separation. As a result, Erie County was split in half forming the Towns of Hamburg (present-day Hamburg and Evans) and Collins (now Collins, Colden, the southern part of Lancaster and the western portion of Aurora). The two towns in the south eventually exceeded the population of the two northern towns with Hamburg having the largest population and covering the most area. More information on Hamburg's history can be found on the Wikipedia page.

Economy

For much of its history Hamburg was primarily an agricultural community. In 1856, the community passed New York state's first dog licensing law in response to rabies deaths. Until the early 20th century cattle and dairy farms operated throughout the town. automobile and railroad access, Hamburg quickly became a summer retreat for wealthy families. Hamburg's lakeside setting attracted numerous seasonal and year-round mansions. Today, many of Hamburg's oldest and grandest homes are found along the shore of Lake Erie.

As Buffalo's suburbs grew Hamburg became a bedroom community for managers and other white-collar workers. Major employers included Bethlehem Steel, Trico (windshield wipers), Carborundum Corporation (abrasives) and Westinghouse (now ABB Group). More recently national retailers have located along Camp Road near the Walden Galleria Mall and other shopping destinations. Hamburg continues to attract new commercial and industrial investment while retaining its historic charm.
