History

The town of Greenburgh was created in 1788, formed from the town of Mount Pleasant. Greenburgh's rolling hills and valleys can be seen from many of its downtown vantage points. Through its prime location near the Hudson River, settlers exploited the territory for its lush greenery and fertile soil. Greenburgh developed on the banks of the Hudson River as a trading outpost and port. Control of The Bronx and Westchester County passed between England and the Dutch in the 17th century and played a role in the American Revolutionary War after the English took over New Amsterdam in 1664.

Today, the town retains a diverse breadth of cultures and landscapes. It includes suburban bedroom communities and is a vibrant business hub. Greenburgh's Rockefeller State Park Preserve was created from the family estate of Standard Oil heir William Rockefeller. For recreation, residents of Greenburgh patronize the Theodore D. Young Community Center, the Greenburgh Nature Center, and the six public golf courses and beaches operated by the Town of Greenburgh.
