Greece is a suburb of Rochester located in Monroe County, New York. As of the 2020 census, the population of Greece was 95,695 residents, making it the largest suburb of Rochester and the third largest town in New York state. Greece is located northwest of downtown Rochester along the shores of Lake Ontario.

History

The town of Greece was originally part of the Pultneyville township when Monroe County was formed in 1821. The area was largely unsettled until the early 19th century when it began to grow as a farming community. By the mid 1800s, railroads and ports along Lake Ontario transformed Greece into a bustling hub of commerce and industry. The town of Greece was officially formed in 1822 and incorporated in 1835.

Greece is located at 43.227651, -77.687650. It covers a total area of 40.2 square miles, of which 36.5 square miles is land and 3.7 square miles is water. Greece borders Lake Ontario to the northwest and the city of Rochester to the southeast.

Demographics

As of the 2020 US Census, there were 95,695 people living in Greece. The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 10.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.5% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.9% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 5.7% of the population.

Attractions

Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse

One of the most iconic landmarks in Greece is the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse located along the Lake Ontario shoreline. The lighthouse was constructed in 1822 and remains an important navigation aid along the lake. The lighthouse is open for public tours and provides sweeping views of Lake Ontario and Rochester in the distance.

Long Pond Nature Trail

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Long Pond Nature Trail located within Long Pond Park offers over 2 miles of wooded trails around the pond and through wetland areas.
