History of Elmont

The area now known as Elmont originally belonged to the Rockaway Native American tribe. In 1650, English settlers acquired the land that would become Elmont from the Rockaways. The original European settlers used the area mainly for agriculture. In the 1890s, Elmont began to develop into a bedroom community as it was conveniently located close to Brooklyn. Major transportation infrastructure like the Long Island Motor Parkway and Belmont Park racetrack caused further development in the early 20th century. Today, Elmont retains its suburban nature but is much more densely populated than its early days.
