East Meadow is a hamlet and census-designated place in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 38,132 at the 2010 census. East Meadow is located in the Town of Hempstead. It is located on the Hempstead Plains which covers much of central and eastern Nassau County.

Geography and Demographics

East Meadow is located at 40.7167° N, 73.5667° W (40°43′00′′ N, 73°34′00′′ W). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.4 square miles (19 km2), all land.

As of the 2020 Census, there were 38,132 people and 11,050 households in East Meadow. The racial makeup of East Meadow was 78.4% White, 3.6% African American, 0.1% Native American, 13.0% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.6% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races.

There were 11,050 households, out of which 36.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them. The average household size was 3.18 and the average family size was 3.55. The median age was 40 years.

History

East Meadow was first settled in the 1640s and was part of Hempstead Plains. It was settled by English colonists and developed as a farming community due to its fertile soil. In the 18th and 19th centuries, its proximity to brooks and marshes provided a habitat for trout and pickerel. By the 20th century, East Meadow was transformed into a commuter suburb with the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road.

Notable historical sites include the Saltbox Museum, originally an 18th century saltbox house owned by the Mott family. There is also the Cradle of Aviation Museum, which highlights Long Island's role in early aviation and space flight.
