History

Commack's early settlers were predominantly Quakers. While Joseph Jessup and John Brush were the first white men to purchase land in the area, documented as early as 1721, it was the rapid influx of Quakers throughout the remainder of the 18th century which helped develop the township into an agricultural community.

The origin of the name Commack is traced to the Algonquian Indian word Conooroo-mak, meaning "pleasant place near water."
