History

Binghamton was first settled around 1802 by William Bingham, a wealthy landowner from Philadelphia. He purchased a 40,000 acre tract of land in what is now Broome County. The village of Binghamton was incorporated in 1834 and named after William Bingham. Early settlers were attracted by the area's natural resources and rivers that allowed for manufacturing. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Binghamton grew rapidly as an industrial and transportation center. Major companies like Endicott Johnson Shoe Company, IBM, and Ansco located factories in the region. Today, while manufacturing has declined, Binghamton remains an important regional hub.
