Bethlehem is a town in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 33,656 at the 2020 census. The town is located in the central part of the county, immediately south of the city of Albany.

History

Bethlehem was first settled by Europeans in the early 17th century by Dutch colonists. The town was originally part of the patroonship Rensselaerswyck, granted by the Dutch West India Company. The town was formed from the town of Watervliet in 1793. For its first two hundred years, Bethlehem was primarily agricultural. The development of the town occurred rapidly following the completion of the first railroad in 1835 and nearby factories soon after.
