Albany is the capital of the U.S. state of New York and the seat and largest city of Albany County. Albany is located on the west bank of the Hudson River approximately 10 miles south of its confluence with the Mohawk River and 135 miles north of New York City.

With a population of 97,279 as of the 2020 census, Albany is the 6th largest city in New York and the 105th largest city in the United States. The population of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy NY Metropolitan Statistical Area was 880,736 according to 2018 Census Bureau estimates, making it the 49th most populous metropolitan area in the United States.

Albany has a long and rich history dating back to the 17th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Mohican tribe prior to the arrival of Dutch colonists in the early 1600s. The fur trade brought the first European settlers to Albany, which was chartered as a city in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 and steadily grew into a hub for transportation, industry, and education. Today, Albany is known for its government, healthcare, education, nanotechnology, and financial sectors. Albany is located approximately 150 miles north of New York City at 42°39′35′′N 73°45′53′′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.4 square miles, of which 21.3 square miles is land and 0.2 square miles, or 0.85%, is water.

Albany has a humid continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and hot, wet summers. Average temperatures range from the low 20s Fahrenheit in January to the low 80s Fahrenheit in July. Albany receives around 36 inches of rain per year and 43 inches of snowfall per year. Severe weather events like blizzards, ice storms, and thunderstorms occur sporadically throughout the year.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 97,279 people living in Albany. The racial makeup of the city was 56.3% White, 29.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.6% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 10.8% of the population.

In terms of age, 22.2% of residents were under 18 years, 12.6% were between 18 and 24 years, 29.4% were between 25 and 44 years, 22.7% were between 45 and 64 years, and 13% were over 65 years. The median age was 33.3 years.

The average household size was 2.2 people and the average family size was 3.09 people. Around 22.8% of households had children under 18 years and 36.6% were married couples living together. 26.6% of households were made up of single occupancy and 31.1% had someone living alone over 65 years old.
