South Valley is a census-designated place in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 40,976 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The South Valley has a long history going back over 400 years. The area was originally inhabited by Native American groups including the Tiwa and Tewa peoples. Spanish colonists started settling in the area in the late 1500s and established farming communities. The South Valley was part of the original Spanish land grants in New Mexico. throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, the South Valley remained an important agricultural area irrigated by Acequias.
