With a population of 84,683 as of the 2020 census, Santa Fe is the capital and fourth-largest city in New Mexico. History

After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Santa Fe continued to serve as the capital of the Mexican territory of Nuevo México. It became part of the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. Santa Fe was chosen as the capital of the U.S. territory of New Mexico in 1850 and remained the capital when New Mexico became a state in 1912.
