Roswell, New Mexico is a city located in southeastern New Mexico, about 200 miles southeast of Albuquerque. As of the 2020 census, the population of Roswell was 48,477 making it the fifth largest city in New Mexico. The city is the county seat of Chaves County and is perhaps best known for the Roswell UFO incident of 1947.

History

Roswell was established in 1871 after businessman and attorney Van C. Smith filed a claim for land that would become part of the town. It was named after Smith's father, Roswell Smith. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s helped establish Roswell as a ranching center and agricultural community. Sheep and cattle ranching were the early economic drivers for the city.

In the 1940s, Roswell Army Air Field was built and served as a training facility for World War II bomber pilots. It was also the site of an alleged UFO crash in 1947, which spawned conspiracy theories and turned Roswell into a major hub for UFO enthusiasts. Though U.S. military officials claimed it was a weather balloon that crashed, many still believe an alien spacecraft and beings were recovered from the crash site. The city embraces its connection to the alleged incident, with alien-themed shops, museums and an annual UFO festival.
