Las Cruces is a city located in Doña Ana County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. With an estimated population of 102,926 as of 2021, it is the second largest city in New Mexico after Albuquerque and the center of population of Doña Ana County.

History

The Las Cruces area was first settled by the Spanish in the late 16th century when it was colonized by Juan de Oñate. The Mesilla Valley became an important stop on the Camino Real, a trade route between Mexico City and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Las Cruces was founded in 1849 when New Mexico became a territory of the United States. It was named after the crosses left behind by the funeral procession for a Mexican priest.

Las Cruces saw battles during the American Civil War due to its location on the route between Texas and the west coast. It later became a key railroad junction connecting ports in Texas with the Pacific Coast. The New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now New Mexico State University, was founded in Las Cruces in 1888. The city grew rapidly in the 20th century and is now known for its modern amenities, bilingual and multicultural heritage, and thriving economy.

Geography

Las Cruces is located at 32.3113° N, 106.7783° W in the Mesilla Valley along the Rio Grande river in southwestern New Mexico. It sits at an elevation of 3,908 feet above sea level. The Organ Mountains overlook the city to the east.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 76.6 square miles. 75.9 square miles of it is land and 0.7 square miles is water. Las Cruces is located approximately 45 miles northwest of El Paso, Texas and 236 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The 2021 census estimated the population of Las Cruces to be 102,926. This makes it the second most populous city in New Mexico after Albuquerque. The racial makeup of the city is:
