Hobbs is a city located in Lea County in southeastern New Mexico, United States. As of the 2019 census, the city had a population of 38,143 residents, making it the largest city in Lea County.

History

Hobbs was founded in 1907 when James Hobbs established a homestead and named the area Hobbs after discovering traces of oil. The small town grew steadily over the years due to ranching and oil drilling in the area. In 1928 major oil drilling began after the Midwest Refining Company's discovery of oil. This led to a population boom in Hobbs throughout the 1930s.

During World War II, Hobbs Army Air Base was constructed just north of Hobbs. The base trained over 10,000 men and women for the armed services. After the war ended, most of the base was sold off for civilian use, contributing to Hobbs' growth in the 1950s and beyond. Today the old air base is known as Hobbs Industrial Air Park.
