Clovis lies east of the New Mexico-Texas state line near the southern base of the Llano Estacado and north of the Llano Estacado's border with the Edwards Plateau. The city's location provides access to the major Southwest cities of Albuquerque, Denver, Lubbock, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

History

The history of Clovis begins with the coming of the railroad in the early 1900s. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was building a line west to California when it decided to create a town at the border of New Mexico and Texas. The town was named after Clovis, New Mexico's first permanent resident, Clovis Cole. On January 25, 1907, Clovis was officially incorporated.

Early settlers attracted to Clovis included wheat farmers from the American Midwest and the Great Plains. The Santa Fe Railroad built the Clovis Depot and adjacent Hotel Clovis in the center of town to accommodate rail passengers and wheat farmers. The railroad and agriculture were the foundations of early Clovis and remain central to the area's economy today.

During World War II, Clovis housed the Clovis Army Airfield which trained US Army Air Corps pilots. After the war, the airfield became the building site for Cannon Air Force Base which remains in operation today. The nearby Tourist Information Center has exhibits on the history of the airfield and Cannon AFB's role in US defense.
