History of Missoula

The Missoula Valley has been home to Native American tribes for thousands of years. In more recent history, European settlers established Hellgate Village in 1860 at the confluence of the Clark Fork and Bitterroot Rivers. By 1866, photographer William H.H. Dickinson had set up a studio in the settlement and named it Missoula Mills. The name Missoula comes from the Salish word "Nemissoolatakoo," which means "by the chilling water." Missoula was officially incorporated in 1883.
